Meet Volunteers at Sprotbrough Community Library

Sprotbrough Community Library

Sprotbrough Community library has been run by volunteers since April 2012. Many of the volunteers who started back then are still there and enjoying every minute. Maureen and Steph have been telling us what they love about their role and what customers will find when they visit the library.

The first thing visitors notice are the gorgeous flower boxes at the front that have really brightened up the entrance.  The library now has a lovely open area with comfortable sofas for reading the newspapers, and where customers can have a coffee for a small cost or free mineral water.

Sandra and Steph enjoy meeting people and being able to chat to their customers about the books they like and suggest  new authors. They know that for some customers they may be the only friendly face they see or speak to all day.  They also told us how some volunteers have gained valuable skills that have enabled them to go into paid employment.

The library has a cheerful Children’s area that ensures children of all ages feel at home.

Lyndon the chairperson of the library committee reports:

When Sprotbrough became a community library in April 2012 one of the first decisions taken by the new committee was to start offering courses and classes in the upstairs meeting room. Our view was that for the library to thrive, we would have to attract new people over the threshold. This policy has worked very successfully, and in 2016 we upgraded the existing meeting room and created a second meeting room. This has allowed us to extend the range of opportunities, and to date we have offered over forty different activities and groups, serving all ages from babies to senior citizens. Also in 2016 we created a high standard area for the public computers. The traditional library is now fully located downstairs and this area has also been significantly upgraded.

To support these developments we have achieved grant funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, The Big Lottery Fund (two grants), Doncaster Voluntary and Community Scheme and St George’s Rotary Club. The Friends of Sprotbrough Library hold quarterly coffee mornings which provide vital financial support, and bring people into the library.

From the outset we have had fantastic support from the local community. The library is open six days a week, and with typically three shifts per day to cover we need approximately fifty active volunteers. There is always an opportunity for anyone young or old who would like to join our excellent team of volunteers.

We are very fortunate to have a part time volunteer coordinator, Maureen O’ Brien, who is funded from our fundraising efforts, and a part time project coordinator, Sandra Edwards, whose role is grant funded.
