Shared Reading in South Yorkshire libraries
Doncaster Library services has joined forces with national charity The Reader to give people in our region the chance to experience Shared reading and enjoy its benefits. Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham libraries are being supported by The Reader and the Arts Council to train up to 30 people to deliver shared reading groups in libraries and community venues.
Shared Reading is a group session that takes place weekly for about an hour. The group leader reads aloud a poem or short story. Group members can also read aloud if they desire, or just listen. The poem and story are then discussed and this will often spark connection, reflection and discovery. Shared reading is a very relaxing and positive experience and is open to all ages, backgrounds and abilities. It can develop confidence, improve health and wellbeing and reduce social isolation.
Come along and experience for yourself the many benefits and pleasures of reading aloud.
Look out for details of our very first Shared reading group which will be starting in early 2019. If shared reading appeals to you please let staff have your details and we can keep you updated. In addition we are running taster sessions in January for anyone interested in delivering their own group. Volunteers wishing to become Reader Leaders will receive full training from The Reader and ongoing support and assistance from Doncaster Libraries.
