The Doncaster Read

Following our launch of the Doncaster Read in May 2014, in partnership with Doncaster Waterstones, we have featured many different authors, genres and series of books to promote reading for pleasure. Our first Doncaster Read was Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War. We have since featured authors to coincide with a new book or film adaptation of a book coming out or chosen books with a topical or local theme. The issue and renewal figures are improved and the display gives people a focus for trying a book they wouldn’t normally pick from the shelves.

Cover of Fingers in the Sparkle Jar by Chris PackhamVoted the UK’s favourite nature book, Fingers in the Sparkle Jar by Chris Packham is the Doncaster Read for March & April from Doncaster Libraries in association with Doncaster Waterstones. It was one of ten shortlisted books in a nationwide online poll organised by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Landlines Project.

The winners were announced on BBC’s Winterwatch on 31st January this year, a programme which Chris himself presents. In third place came Rob Cowen’s Common Ground, second was Henry Williamson’s classic, Tarka the Otter, with Chris’ unusual and very personal memoir voted the nation’s favourite piece of nature writing.

In an interview for the AHRC afterwards, Chris said that “the initial interest and discussion which the book promoted was about his Aspergers… so to finally see the nature writing recognised, it’s heartening.”

Readers can leave their review in as few as 3 words to let us know what they think by completing a review slip or posting comments online at #DoncasterRead

Have a read and see if it’s your favourite …
