The 1961 Project

Do you remember March and April of 1961?

A time when the Beatles first played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, Gagarin became the first man in space, Jaguar launched the E-Type sports car, and England beat Scotland 9-3 at football. At the same time Doncaster Corporation’s planning department completed a photographic record of the main streets of Doncaster town centre.

Doncaster Local Studies Library is working in conjunction with Doncaster College's Photography Department to capture new images and to assemble a collection of "now" photographs of the shop fronts to compare with the "then" photographs of 50 years ago.

The Local Studies Library staff would like to hear your memories and anecdotes of using, working in, or even running these shops. Do you recollect the films you saw at the cinemas or the cafés where you met your friends?

Please email your memories of Doncaster so that others and future generations can share these.

The Future of the 1961 Project

The intended aim of the 1961 Project is that the two photographic illustrations of 1961 and 2011 in conjunction with the memories and anecdotes collected throughout the 1961 Project will create a ‘living history’ archive and become the core of a book to be produced.  Watch this space…
